Dosage:
Adt:Usually 1gm daily by deep IM
slow IV Inj over at least
2-4mins., or IV infusion.
Severe infections, 2-4gm
as asingle dose every 24
hrs.Gonarrhoea, single dose
of 250mg by IM inj.Peri-op
prophylaxis, 1gm as single
IM or slow IV dose.Colorectal
surgery,2gm by IM slow IV
inj or inj or infusion with
anaerobic antibacterial.Children:Usually
20-50mg/kg once daily by
IM inj slow IV inj over at
least 2-4 mins., or IV infusion.SEvere
infections, up to max. 80mg/kg
daily(max 50mg/kg in neonates).Doses
over 50mg/kg to be given
by slow IV infusion over
at least 30 minutes
Precautions:
Administer cephalosporins cautiously
to penicillin sensitive patients
as there may be a partial crossalergenicity
between the two.Cephalosporin may
be nephrotoxic.Inflammatory reactions
to parentral cephalosporins are
common.Inject preparations for
IM administration deep into the
musculature
AdverseEffects:
Gl disturbances (nausea, vomiting,
diorrhoea) and hypersensitivity
phenomena.Eosinophilia, transient
neutropenia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia.
Elevated SOPT and SGPT. Mild elevation
in BUN. Headache, dizziness and
paresthesia. Fever and dyspnea
Indication:
Severe respiratory and genitourinary
tract, bone and joint, abdominal
infections, sepsismeningitis
ContraIndication:
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins
or releated antibiotics
