Description:
Ibuprofen (Macprofen) belongs to
a group of medicines called
non-steroidal anti-inflammatory
drugs (or NSAIDs). It is an
Anti-inflammatory, Anti-rheumatic,
Analgesic and Anti-pyretic
drug.
Indications:
Adults and Children 2-12 years:
For fast & effective relief
of headaches, toothache and
menstrual pain, for minor aches
and pain associated with arthritis,
muscles, joints and backache,
for reduction of fever and
pain due to colds, sore throat,
immunizatin and earache. Macprofen
is also indicated in the treatment
of the signs & symptoms
of rheumatoid arthritis (including
Juvenile arthritis or Still’s
disease), ankylosing spondylitis,
osteoarthritis, and other non-
rheumatoid (seronegative) arthropathies
and in non–articular
rheumatic conditions. Ibuprofen
(Macprofen) is indicated in
the particular conditions such
as frozen shoulder (capsulitis),
bursitis, tendonitis, tenosynovitis
and low back pain. Macprofen
can also be used in soft tissue
injuries such as sprains and
strains.
Dosage and Administration:
Children under 2 years …5
mg/kg body weight.
Children over 2 years …10
mg/kg body weight
Note: Dose may be repeated every
6 to 8 hours while symptoms persist,
up to three doses a day)
Macprofen Suspension
in 3-4 times a day:
06 - 12 months 1/4 - 1/2 teaspoonful
12 - 24 months 1/2 - 1 teaspoonful
02 - 04 years 3/4 - 1 1/2 teaspoonful
04 - 08 years 1- 2 1/2 teaspoonful
08 - 12 years 1 1/2 -4 teaspoonful
Macprofen
Tablets:
Adults…1200 mg daily in
three divided doses.
In severe conditions, it can
be advantageous to increase the
dosage to 1600mg daily in divided
doses until the acute phase is
brought under control.
Dysmenorrheal…1200 mg per
day in three divided doses; Analgesia…1200
to 1600 mg daily given in three
divided doses.
Dental or post-operative pain
an initial dose of 800 mg may
be given.
Note: The total daily dose of
Macprofen should not exceed
2400 mg.
Contraindications:
In common with other non-steroidal
anti-inflammatory agents, Ibuprofen
(Macprofen) should not be given
to patients with severe or active
peptic ulceration. Use during
pregnancy, should be avoided,
if possible.
Precautions:
Ibuprofen (Macprofen) should
be prescribed with caution
in patients with asthma especially
in those who have developed
bronchospasm using other non-steroidal
agents.
Side-effects
Adverse reactions reported include
dyspepsia, gastro-intestinal
intolerance, bleeding and skin
rashes. Thrombocytopenia and
toxic amblyopia have occurred
very rarely but in those cases
reported, recovery occurred promptly
on cessation of treatment.
Storage:
Store at room temperature. Protect
from heat, light and moisture.
Keep all medicine out of the
reach of children.
