Dosage:
Tabs:Adt:250-750mg twice daily
usually for 5-10 days (3
days in acute cystitis).
Gonorrhoea, single dose of
250mg. Prophylaxis single
750mg dose 60-90 minutes
pre-op. Children:Only where
benefit exceeds risk, 7.5-15mg/kg
daily in two divided doses
Precautions: Epilepsy, history of CNS disorders.
Severe renal impairment; reduce
dose by half. Patients should be
well hydrated. Patients with G-6-PD
defects. Driving or operating machinery
AdverseEffects: Local irritation and pain at injection
site. Gl disturbances. Dizziness,
headache, tremor, confusion, convulsions,
sleep disorders, pashes, photosensitivity,
joint pain. Judgement and dexterity
may be impairmed. Transient increase
in serum creatinine. Haematological,
hepatic and renal disturbances.
Rarely, vasculitis, pseudomenbranous
colitis, haemorrhagic bullae, stevens-Johnson
and lyells syndrome, visual disturbances,
transient hearing loss, tenosynovitis
(discontinue treatment and rest
limb), impaired taste and smell,
tachycardia
Indication: UTI, respiratory, ENT, eye, skin
and soft tissue, bone, joint, pelvic,
biliary tract, intrabdominal and
Gl infections. Gonorrhoea. Severe
systemic infection. Gram-negative
pneumonia (not for first the treatment
in pneumococcal pneumonia). Prophylaxis
in upper Gl surgery or endoscopy
ContraIndication: Children and growing adolescents
except where benefit exceed risks.
Pregnancy and lactation.
